What is reading with depth?Reading with depth can mean many things, but for the purposes of this page, it is about their interaction with and comprehension of the text they are reading. For example, a student who has achieved a "Mastery" level of reading with depth would:
Students don't have to annotate and highlight every text they read. Real, adult readers don't read novels and put post-it notes on every 2-3 page. But, if an adult reader is studying something, they do annotate and highlight. Teach this distinction to students. When they are reading a new non-fiction text or reading for a specific purpose using a model anchor text, encourage them to use highlighting and annotation as a tool to help them understand and remember. Fix-Up strategies, on the other hand, can be used with any and every text. |
Mini-Lessons/Interventions On Depth:Click here for a sample of reading mini-lessons on depth from Jennifer Serravallo's book, Reading Strategies. I highly recommend this book! (Must have an AISD login to access the excerpt; you may have to download for hyperlinks to work.)
Also, check out these "Fix-Up Strategies," which are great for teaching students. They can use different strategies in different situations to help de-code challenging words or phrases. |
