Every teacher knows that there is a lot of ground work to do in the first week of school and that it is also, unfortunately, the time for the most shifts. Students move from class to class period or teacher to teacher. Rosters drop down as some students don't show and new students who register late are added unexpectedly. That's why this FIRST 20 DAYS document was developed. It can be used with any secondary ELA classroom. It introduces the key ideas of a successful Language Arts classroom, begins the process of creating an Interactive Notebook, and nurtures the beginning of a Writer's Notebook.
